It most definitely is, as you put it, a standout offering amongst the unchronicled cases, especially one that has been as adapted as often as the "Giant Rat." Gilbert's version is unique and enjoyable for what is *not* in it, as much as for what is. His respectful homages to Jeremy Brett's interpretation of Sherlock Holmes are always something I enjoy, so I am already patiently waiting for his fourth volume! Thank you very much for commenting, Lucy!goddessinsepiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14216346071787396697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6756608595761528683.post-15803831177345451912011-06-01T13:01:04.418-07:002011-06-01T13:01:04.418-07:00This is one dispatch from your blog I've been ...This is one dispatch from your blog I've been longing to read, ever since I knew this book was on your stack. I'm delighted to learn that it was so satisfying and more than lived up to hopes for a standout offering in the mini-genre of unchronicled cases, with this one arguably possessing the most intriguing title. And what a great cover! I love it! Fascinating how you point out how Gilbert's picturing of Jeremy Brett and the Granada players affected his storytelling in subtle ways. I also appreciate that the exotic locale came to Baker Street (via the client's tale) rather than it being the occasion to send Holmes and Watson on an unlikely voyage. Your review motivates me to seek out this tale told by the 221B fire.Lucyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00187517182328614133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6756608595761528683.post-6744214591620303372011-05-31T09:09:02.055-07:002011-05-31T09:09:02.055-07:00@virtualight: What's wonderful about Gilbert&#...@virtualight: What's wonderful about Gilbert's novel is that it is truly an *original* take on the "Giant Rat" story, so revealing even a little bit of the plot would be giving away the best part. What I wanted to convey was that Gilbert's book was tremendous for what is *not* in it, as well as what is. I'm very glad to hear your interest has been piqued!goddessinsepiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14216346071787396697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6756608595761528683.post-18255136777389669522011-05-31T08:47:29.857-07:002011-05-31T08:47:29.857-07:00I keep forgetting to click Preview and then Post! ...I keep forgetting to click Preview and then Post! So here's my second try at a comment.

Your review really whetted my appetite to read this and most importantly left with little idea of what the book will be about, so kudos for as spoiler free review of a book as I've ever read.virtualighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16544118423865170131noreply@blogger.com
