"The Adventure of the Dancing Men" is one story where the client's life and circumstances most certainly touch my heart. Of course, it is really Elsie Cubitt who wins affection and whose lingering suffering, in the aftermath, is so tragic. Conan Doyle's fiction-writing instinct brings him to this plot, of the English-American marriage, which has proved a touchstone for so many romantic complications (not least, on Julian Fellowes' Downton Abbey). With English and American spouses seemingly sharing language (not quite!), they are still divided in ways that can lead to misunderstanding. In "The Dancing Men," Elsie leaves America to escape her past, and Hilton, with wonderful British discretion, doesn't ask--the whole plot rides on this. And then Abe Slane shows a whole different side of America!

I also love how you brought in Gillette on a par with the American characters--once they pass into history, they are all in the same elite cadre of American players in the Sherlockian universe.

It's a fun coincidence that just last week, BBC America aired a special compilation "Doctor Who in the U.S." http://www.bbcamerica.com/doctor-who/guide/specials/doctor-who-in-the-u-s/ An excellent theme!

~lucyLucyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00187517182328614133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6756608595761528683.post-65144934774157014392012-09-17T06:29:42.108-07:002012-09-17T06:29:42.108-07:00Good thoughts, Thanks.Good thoughts, Thanks.JohnFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13294886206454693626noreply@blogger.com
